One beautiful spring day in May, I was sitting upstairs in my office glancing out the window at the two trees in the front yard which were covered with white blossoms. While admiring nature’s beauty, a thought crossed my mind: we humans are not as lucky as trees! We, like trees, not only are under constant threat of natural disasters such as tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, bacteria, and other diseases, but we are also under the threat of emotional distress, mental illness, depression, pain, sorrow, anxiety, etc.
Trees would never get depressed if their neighboring trees are struck by lightning, or submerged in flood waters. They do not feel any pain when one of their off-shoots is cut down by a lawn-mower, they never get upset over their blossoms being blown away prematurely by a strong wind or fallen by rain, they do not cry if their fruits are attacked by pests; trees are simply protected from feeling the range of emotions that we humans feel every day of our lives. In addition, most trees get to hibernate and rest for half the year in order to recuperate their energy and come to life once again with the beginning of spring. Trees get to have a new beginning once a year, but we do not have that chance. For us, life is a continuous struggle from the moment we are born, with no second chances for most people.
Maybe in the next life, I would be a tree, or a mountain, or a big rock that cannot be moved or harmed by anything.
